If you've heard the term "SEO" and nodded along without really understanding what it means for your specific business — this is for you. No jargon, no technical alphabet soup. Just a plain explanation of what local SEO is and why it matters.

What "Local SEO" Actually Means

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It's the practice of making your website more visible in Google search results. Local SEO is the specific version of that for businesses that serve customers in a specific geographic area — plumbers, HVAC contractors, dentists, auto repair shops, restaurants, and so on.

The goal of local SEO is simple: when someone in your area searches for what you do, you show up. When they don't have good local SEO, they don't.

The Two Places You Want to Show Up

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "HVAC contractor Green Bay," Google shows two types of results:

The Map Pack — the box with a map and 3 local businesses that appears at the top of the search results. This is the highest-visibility placement and gets the most clicks. Appearing here is the primary goal of local SEO.

Organic Results — the regular blue links below the map. These also drive significant traffic, especially for people doing more research before calling.

Good local SEO helps you appear in both.

What Actually Determines Your Rankings

Google uses hundreds of signals to decide who shows up in local search. But for small businesses, the most impactful ones are:

  • Your Google Business Profile — the free listing Google offers every business. It needs to be claimed, verified, and filled out completely.
  • Your website's technical signals — structured data, page titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, and mobile optimization. These tell Google what your business does and who to show it to.
  • Reviews — the number and recency of your Google reviews is a significant ranking factor in local results.
  • Proximity — how close your business is to the person searching. You can't change this, but you can expand your effective reach by properly communicating your service area.

What Doesn't Matter as Much as People Think

Google Ads don't improve your organic or map rankings. You can spend $2,000/month on Google Ads and your organic rankings won't move. Ads and SEO are separate systems.

Social media presence has very little direct impact on Google rankings. Facebook followers, Instagram posts, and LinkedIn connections are largely irrelevant to local search.

Website design and aesthetics have almost no direct SEO impact. A beautiful website with broken technical SEO will rank poorly. An ugly website with perfect technical SEO will rank well.

How Long Does It Take?

Technical fixes typically show results in 4–8 weeks as Google re-crawls your site. New content pages can take 3–6 months to rank. Google Business Profile optimizations can show results in days to weeks.
