WHY YOUR HVAC BUSINESS ISN'T SHOWING UP ON GOOGLE MAPS

The 5 technical reasons most HVAC contractors are invisible in local Google search — and how to fix them without hiring an agency.

If you've searched for your HVAC business on Google Maps and it's not showing up — or showing up far below competitors you know aren't as good as you — you're not alone. It's one of the most common problems we see, and it's almost always fixable.

The Real Reason You're Not Showing Up

Most HVAC contractors assume they're not ranking because they need more reviews, or they need to spend money on Google Ads. Those things help, but they're not usually the root cause. The root cause is almost always technical.

Google uses a set of behind-the-scenes signals to decide who to show in the local map results. If those signals are missing or broken on your website, it doesn't matter how good your reviews are — Google won't confidently show you to local searchers.

The 5 Technical Problems We See Most Often

1. No LocalBusiness Schema Markup

This is the single most common issue we find. Schema markup is a block of code in your website's header that tells Google, in plain structured data: here's our business name, address, phone number, service area, and hours. Without it, Google has to guess at your information — and it often guesses wrong or not at all.

This is why businesses sometimes show up with the wrong hours, wrong phone number, or don't appear in the map pack at all despite having a Google Business Profile.

2. Multiple H1 Tags or Missing H1

Your H1 is the primary heading on each page — the one signal Google uses to understand what that page is about. Most HVAC websites either have no H1, have a generic H1 like "Welcome to Our Website," or accidentally have two or three H1s from a badly built Wix or WordPress template.

Your homepage H1 should say something like "HVAC Contractor — Green Bay, WI" or "Furnace Repair & AC Installation — Northeast Wisconsin." Clear, specific, local.

3. No Meta Description

The meta description is the 2-3 sentence summary that shows under your link in Google search results. When it's missing, Google pulls random text from your page — usually something like "Copyright 2019 Smith HVAC LLC" or a navigation menu item.

A good meta description with your service area and a call to action can improve your click-through rate by 20-30% by itself.

4. Wrong or Missing Service Area Signals

Google needs to understand where you serve, not just where you're located. If your website only mentions your address but never mentions the cities and counties you serve, Google may only show you to people searching within a few blocks of your address.

Adding your service area explicitly — both in your content and in your schema markup — dramatically expands the geographic area where you appear in search results.

5. No Reviews Visible on Your Website

Google looks at your website as part of evaluating your trustworthiness. A website with no social proof — no reviews, no testimonials, no ratings — looks like a newer or less established business, even if you've been running for 30 years.

Embedding a Google reviews widget or adding testimonials to your homepage is a fast trust signal that helps both conversions and rankings.

What To Do About It

All five of these issues are fixable without rebuilding your website. They're code-level changes that can be made in 2-3 hours regardless of whether your site is on Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, or a custom build.

The question is whether you want to do it yourself or have someone handle it. If you want to handle it yourself, each of these can be looked up and implemented by a technically minded person in an afternoon. If you'd rather just have it done and move on, that's what we do — free audit first, flat-rate fix after.

Either way, the first step is knowing which of these problems your site actually has. That's what the free audit is for.
